Free Unity Character

I was just playing around with Unity 3D and though I’d share my work with anyone interested. Basically I have made this character available for download. You can use it however you like completely free. If there is an interest I’ll create different skins for the character too.

Download directly from Unity Asset Store. More information below.

Update: Texture Pack now available in the Unity Asset Store.

Screenshots from Unity engine:

Unity Web Player:

The character was created using ZBrush and 3ds Max 2013, Download directly from Unity Asset Store.

The Character is 7720 triangles and use just one standard Unity material, with Diffuse map + Specular(alpha), normal map and a tiny cube map. The maps were made as 2048×2048, but exported to 1024×1024 in unity, you can easily change the resolution inside Unity.

I’d love to get your feedback if you use the character, and I’d fix any bugs you might come across. Please credit Character Ink. if you choose to use it,.

Great figure tom, would it be hard to turn him into a ww2 figure.

    • Tom IsaksenTom Isaksen11-16-2011

Thanks, you probably won’t see a WW2 version, but I do plan to make a futuristic American Football player skin for it.

l go to download the charactar but it says i need to find the file, what do i do?

    • Tom IsaksenTom Isaksen02-21-2012

I can’t seem to find any issues with downloading the files. Let me know if the problem is still valid. I tested the links from two separate locations. Is the problem with 3ds max or Unity?

Excelent work. You have good skills. Congratulations.

Hola ^^ gran trabajo.

Very nice…if you could post a tutorial on character modeling, it will be very helpful. Please consider… Thanks in advance.

This looks great, been looking for a good just basic mannequin style model for tests and learning projects. This goes far beyond what i was looking for, but it looks to good not to use, thanks for providing such a great resource for free.

      You’re welcome 🙂

This is great work! I just started out in game design with unity, is this possible to use as a first or third person character and do we have to rig the animation? 😀

    • Tom IsaksenTom Isaksen07-29-2012

Hi George. You can use the character for the 3rd person stuff if you want, but you will have to do the animations, or possibly re-use 3ds Max biped animations,. the character have a pretty basic rig, so that might work OK, to some extend. Good luck.

  11. George BGeorge B07-29-2012

    Ok, thanks!

This model is looking so simple, but epic !
Thanks for the download link !

    Its a Great Work!
    where ist the animation?

    • Tom IsaksenTom Isaksen08-26-2012

Thanks… There isn’t really any animations for this.. but since it’s created on a standard biped in 3ds Max, you will be able to find a lot of animation out there on the web which you can use with just a little bit of tweak.

  16. ÁlvaroÁlvaro10-17-2012

Thanks for making and sharing this free character, it looks great. If I understand it correctly “You can use it however you like completely free” means this model can be used in commercial projects too, is that right? (I’m not sure if my personal project will ever come to that but I’d like to make sure before I use it, just in case).

    • Tom IsaksenTom Isaksen10-17-2012

Yeah, you can use it commercially too, all I ask is to be credited.

      • ÁlvaroÁlvaro10-17-2012

That’s great, thanks for the quick reply and for sharing the character.

  17. DinukaDinuka10-20-2012

Hey thanks a lot for this great model 🙂 I’m new to unity and I’m learning 3rd person controls and stuff. I’d like to import this character to my game and attach the code, How do I import it as an asset? Much appreciated

    • Tom IsaksenTom Isaksen10-22-2012

Sorry, I don’t offer that kind of support. I just make the characters 🙂

    • AhmadAhmad01-13-2013

You just need to add it to the project’s “Assets” folder 🙂

You can make a prefab from it once there, and even export it as a Unity package if you want.

I didn’t try this particular model yet, but that’s the general case 😉

  18. anonanon10-28-2012

can you pls make a harry potter character preferably from his younger years (year1-2) thank you it would be really helpful for my i.t project

  19. RobRob12-09-2012

    Hi Tom,

That’s masterwork, you’re a legend, and very generous of you making it free.

Since you said “If there is an interest”… perhaps a super-hero skin would be gorgeous and a perfect fit for this character? 🙂

    • Tom IsaksenTom Isaksen12-12-2012

      Hi Rob, thanks.

Super hero is not a bad idea… I’m a little pressured for time at the moment so it’s not likely to happen anytime soon… but feel free to make your own modifications to the character.

I’m new to Unity and now struggled at creating a very simple biped character.

I’ve download your *.max file and *fbx file.
the *.fbx works alright and I can see the bones.
however, when I export the *.fbx from the *.max, the bipped gets mess up…
    so does my own model.
Googled and watch / read many articles, look so simple… but just won’t work…
be awesome if you could share your export settings!

btw, I tried to use the built-in “Third Personal Controller” with the “idle”, “walk”, “run”, “jump_pose” animations that came with Unity, the *.fbx you’ve created seem not compatible.
do you know if it’ll work with the animations from the “Asset Store”?

    • Tom IsaksenTom Isaksen10-14-2013

If you re-export from the max file, you need to tick the ‘Convert Deforming Dummies to Bones’.. which might affect bones. Tangents and Binormals too, but not bone related.

The skeleton is a standard 3ds Max biped, so theoretically any 3ds max biped animations would work, but differences in proportions etc will affect the result.

      Good luck.

Hi Tom. I’m a Game Design student at Columbia College Chicago, and I would love to use your model for a sci-fi game that I’m making on the side (kudos on uploading it for free, by the way!). I intend to use it as sort of a private security, hired gun type thing as the main enemy for the vigilante character. I’m no stranger to Photoshop, but editing Diffuse and Normal Maps is unfamiliar territory to me. If you could add some sort of visual to identify them as a guard, maybe a badge or insignia, that would be awesome. Regardless, I always credit designers for things they put on the Asset Store, and once again, kudos on the free upload.

    Thanks a bunch,
    Aidan Walsh

  31. JulioJulio12-14-2013

    Hi Tom,

Thanks for the model, it looks amazing! I am completely new to animation and 3D design, so the following are total noob questions, but I’m having a hard time with it; I am trying to animate it by importing the fbx into Blender (don’t have 3d max and can’t really afford its price), but there are a couple of things that don’t import correctly:

1 – The texture. The model is completely de-texturized. I imagine that won’t be a big problem as they are separete in the folder, but just to double check.
2 – The rig isn’t being imported, so animating it would be kind of hard (as it tries to rotate/translate/etc each individual point of the triangles).

    Thank you!

    • Tom IsaksenTom Isaksen12-14-2013

To get the textures working you have to re-assign in a material.. but I don’t know Blender so I can’t really help you with why the skeleton doesn’t work. Sorry.

  32. VedranVedran01-13-2014

Hey Tom, great model I am using it at the moment..
Works flawlessly, may I request skin for it?

    • Tom IsaksenTom Isaksen01-13-2014

Awesome stuff… thanks for posting.. but sorry to say I don’t currently offer any new skins for this model, since it’s free.

  33. ErdnussknackerErdnussknacker01-24-2014

Could you please create a version without the spikes on his head and without the round thing on his neck and occiput? 🙂

  34. NickNick04-10-2014
